The Surroundings

Mijnkathedraal Zwartberg A district within the city of Genk with still visible accents from its resent past in mining. A community evolved by and with several nationalities, religions and traditions, giving a special colorfulness in a bronze greenness landscape.

With the individual character of “our” country but nevertheless so much “different”;
with garden districts and a coalmine cathedral, with international smells and dishes, renovated industrial monuments and with a still tangible friendship between the elderly (kompels) ... all this located to a cross-border bicycle route network of more than 2000 kilometers, frequently car-free!

Bokrijk, Kattevennen, the national park “hoge Kempen”, nature area “De Maten” (the half-measures), Hengelhoef, Kelchterhoef ... A wonderful combination remained between full nature and the realignment of still the mine patrimony, its ups and downs, history and abrupt end. Less than 30 minutes, is the Chic Outlet Shopping "Maasmechelen Village" and 4 amazing golf courses : Spiegelven Golf Club, Flanders Nippon, Limburg Golf&Country Club en Millennium Golf.

Today renewal, change, disappearance of Terrill’s and shaft towers, the passage of black gold to liquid gold; Genoels-Elderen, Aldeneyck… and so much more, a coalmine region which becomes slowly a wine region.
